Is Olive Oil Good for Your Skin? What the Research Shows

In Greece and southern Italy, olive oil has been a skincare product for about as long as it has been a food. It went into soap, into cleansing balms, onto newborns, and onto the hands of the women doing the pressing. The habit traveled well. It turns up now in bathroom cabinets and morning shot routines a long way from any olive grove.

The useful question is whether the tradition knows something. On the eating side it does, and the research pointing that way is stronger than most wellness claims ever get.

The Short Answer

The best evidence sits on the eating side. Two large studies of what people eat found less sun damage and less facial photoaging among people using more olive oil. One of them found that link for olive oil and found nothing for the same kind of fat from meat and dairy. The compounds behind it are absorbed well. The one piece of the old advice that does not hold up is rubbing plain oil into skin that is already dry or eczema-prone.

The Mediterranean Habit Has Data Behind It

Two studies went looking for a link between diet and how skin ages. Both found olive oil sitting inside it.

A 2001 study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition measured diet and skin in 453 older adults living in Greece, Australia and Sweden. Sun damage was mapped at a sun-exposed site using a surface measurement method rather than an eyeball estimate. Higher olive oil intake tracked with less damage, alongside vegetables, fish and legumes. Butter, margarine and sugar tracked the other way.

The larger one is more specific. A 2012 analysis in PLoS One followed 2,919 French adults aged 45 to 60 whose diets were recorded across at least ten separate days. Trained investigators graded facial photoaging on a six-point scale. Severe photoaging was less common among people eating more monounsaturated fat from olive oil. The same fat from dairy, meat and processed meat showed no association at all.

That last detail is what makes the finding worth something. If the effect came down to eating more fat, the animal sources would have moved too. They did not. Something about olive oil specifically is tracking with how these faces aged.

Both studies measured people at one point in time, and neither assigned anyone to eat olive oil. People who cook with it tend to eat more vegetables as well. The French authors credited either the oil or the eating pattern that travels with it. Either way it is the fair reading, and still a good reason to keep the bottle on the counter.

What Is in the Bottle

Olive oil carries monounsaturated fat and vitamin E, and a real extra virgin oil also carries polyphenols. The ones with research behind them are hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleacein and oleocanthal, the compound behind the peppery sting at the back of your throat.

How much of any of that a bottle holds varies enormously. The extra virgin grade sets no minimum for polyphenols, so two bottles with identical labels can differ by a factor of ten or more. Supermarket oil that has spent a year on a shelf often runs between 50 and 100 mg/kg. That range is the single biggest reason the same habit produces different results for different people.

The Compounds Get In

A common line online holds that most polyphenols pass straight through the body. For olive polyphenols that is a misreading of research done on other plant compounds. An ileostomy study found that at least 55 to 66 percent of a dose is taken up. Olive polyphenols rank among the best absorbed compounds of their kind.

Once absorbed, they have been measured against several outcomes. European regulators reviewed that work and authorized one claim for olive polyphenols. It covers protection of blood lipids from oxidative damage, at 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g of oil. A 16-week trial at 15 mg a day moved oxidative stress and inflammation markers in blood. A separate 18-month trial tracked aging-related markers on a polyphenol-rich diet.

None of those trials photographed anyone's face. What they establish is that a measured dose of these compounds reaches the bloodstream and registers on markers researchers care about.

What They Do in Skin Cells

Laboratories keep coming back to these compounds because of what happens when skin cells meet them directly.

A 2023 study in Nutrients from the University of Granada treated cultured human fibroblasts with hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and oleocanthal for 24 hours. All three raised cell proliferation. Fibronectin went up and the cells migrated across a gap faster, which is the behavior researchers look for in wound repair.

A 2025 study in Scientific Reports exposed skin cells to UVB light and treated them with oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol and verbascoside together. Markers of cell senescence and inflammation came down and collagen-degrading enzymes were suppressed.

Cells in a dish sit in a chosen concentration of a pure compound, with no barrier above them and no liver clearing them. Results like these show what a molecule is capable of and point researchers toward the next study. They are the reason this field is active rather than the finish line.

The One Study That Measured Faces

Dermatology units in Rome and Catanzaro ran the study the cell work invites. In a 2024 paper in Medicina, 70 adults applied a serum containing 1 percent oleocanthal and oleacein twice daily for 30 days. Faces were photographed and scored with an imaging system at the start, at 15 days and at 30 days.

Wrinkle scores fell in three of the four age and sex groups. Women aged 45 to 79 averaged a 34 percent reduction, men aged 20 to 44 averaged 52 percent, and men aged 45 to 79 averaged 47 percent. Women aged 20 to 44 showed a 26 percent change that did not reach significance.

Those are encouraging numbers from an early study, and three details set their weight. Every participant applied the same active serum, so there was no untreated group for comparison. Fifty of the seventy came back for the final visit. The formula also contained vitamin E and sweet almond oil, so the olive compounds cannot be separated from the rest of it.

What the study describes is a cosmetic formulation standardized to a known percentage of two olive compounds. Nobody has run the same test on a kitchen bottle.

Where the Old Advice Does Not Hold Up

One part of the tradition came back against the habit when researchers tested it. Worth knowing before it becomes a nightly routine.

A team at the University of Sheffield published a 2013 study in Pediatric Dermatology testing the habit directly. Six drops of olive oil went onto one forearm twice a day, in 19 adult volunteers, some with a history of eczema and some without. After four weeks those forearms showed a measurable drop in the integrity of the outer skin layer, along with mild redness. Sunflower oil, applied the same way in the same people, held the barrier and improved hydration.

The authors concluded that olive oil should not be the default for treating dry skin or for infant massage. Their point was narrow and practical. Working a heavy oil into skin whose barrier is already compromised is a different act from cooking with it.

Anyone with eczema, dermatitis or a diagnosed skin condition should take this one to a dermatologist. Infant skincare is a conversation for a pediatrician.

What a Number on the Bottle Tells You

Walk down a skincare aisle and most active ingredients arrive as a proprietary blend. The label names the compound and stops there. Concentration, source and batch testing go undisclosed, so a meaningful dose looks identical to a token one.

Olive polyphenols are unusual in that they can be counted. A laboratory can report hydroxytyrosol, oleocanthal and oleacein in mg/kg for a specific harvest, and a producer can publish that certificate. That does not make olive oil a treatment for anything, and the research is still where it is. It does mean you can know what you are getting, which is rare in this category and is the part we think is worth defending.

The Study Nobody Has Run Yet

For all of the above, one obvious experiment is missing. No one has given people olive oil to swallow, measured their skin against a control group over months, and published the result. A search of the published literature for trials pairing a Mediterranean diet or olive oil with skin aging comes back empty.

The closest attempt used a different material. A 2025 trial in Frontiers in Nutrition gave 65 postmenopausal women 250 mg of olive leaf extract or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Leaf extract is sold on its oleuropein content while oil is graded on hydroxytyrosol, so the two are related products with different chemistry. Blood markers of tissue aging came back flat once the researchers corrected for testing many at once. Skin was an exploratory question in a subgroup of 26 women, where pore count and one surface measure improved. Four of the authors work for the company making the extract, which the paper discloses.

So the diet evidence and the cell evidence both point somewhere, and the trial that would connect them has not been run. Both of those are worth something, and neither the glowing version nor the dismissive one describes where the science sits.

The Mediterranean habit of eating olive oil is the part with evidence behind it. It holds up better than most things sold for skin. Two large studies found less photoaging among people eating more of it, and one of them found nothing for the same fat from meat and dairy. The compounds responsible are absorbed well and measurable in a bottle. On the face, a standardized 1 percent serum lowered wrinkle scores in an early study. The one habit to retire is working plain oil into skin that is already dry or eczema-prone. Nobody has yet run the trial that would settle the eating question. A bottle with a published number is still the only way to know what you are getting.
